Summer jobs, Student jobsSummer job: Environmental Field TechnicianType: age 30 & under / summerOrganization: Watersheds CanadaPosition Location: Perth, Ontario (or Central-Eastern Ontario with ability to regular work out of Perth head office)Reports to: National Conservation DirectorLength of Contract: TBD (depending on funding).Anticipated start date: April 27, 2026.Pay Scale: $18.00/hrPosition Purpose: The successful applicant will contribute to the stewardship and outreach work at Watersheds Canada by working to raise landowner awareness of water stewardship principles and environmental impacts on the lakes within the area. Working with partners, organizations and individuals, the Environmental Technician Students are responsible with assisting in the delivery of our Natural Edge Program. This will include field work focusing on carrying out shoreline naturalizations and restoration using native plants species. The students will assist in naturalizing shorelines by planting native trees and shrubs, conduct site visits at shoreline properties, and deliver online workshops and presentations and outreach materials.Primary ResponsibilitiesAid in delivery of our spring planting program; planting native species along shorelines of residential, public, and agricultural lands.Promote our program and engage new landowners in shoreline naturalization projects.Represent the project, the proponent and partners at online environmental events.Assist with landowner site visits including data collection and entry.Assist with creating personalized planting plans for landowners taking part in the program.Solicit information from residents, attendees of events, etc. that may contribute to data collection activities (surveys and evaluations).Help organize and deliver workshops and presentations on both our program and habitat creation topics.Care for native plants including watering, potting, and maintenance.Undertake administrative duties necessary for the execution of field work, including documentation of activities and reporting.Assist in the distribution of information packages and surveys to residents of our target lakes.Conduct fieldwork, analyze data and interpret results.Develop copy for outreach materials and content creation for media releases, social media, blogs, and videos.Additional ResponsibilitiesSupport other project components and staff as assigned by the managementAct as a spokesperson for the organizationTravel using own vehicle (G license)Evening and weekend work is requiredQualification RequirementsEducation: Some College or University, with preference given to those with a specialization in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies/Science or Biology.Experience: None required, however preference will be given to those with some experience in the conservation and/or non-profit sector(s).SkillsAbility to identify both native and invasive flora and faunaExcellent judgment and decisionmaking skillsComfortable with public speaking and engagement of the publicExcellent English written and oral communicationProven multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment, completing projects within time constraintsComputer skills with proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Zoom, Google Suite, and AdobeAbility to work both independently and in a team environmentProven high level of motivation and initiativeFieldwork is a strong assetComfortable working on and around waterHigh attention to detail for recording field data and generating reports, planting plansAbility to complete projects on time, within tight deadlines, and with limited supervisionOtherValid driver’s license and access to a vehicleAble to work outside in all weather conditionsSome physical work, therefore ability to carry up to 50lbs is an assetFirst-aid/CPRCanada Summer Jobs Funding RequirementsMust be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of employmentLegally entitled to work in CanadaCanadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employmentPossess a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employmentWatersheds Canada is committed to improving levels of diversity among our team.
