GOV.UK states the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over in packing roles is £12.50 per hour from 1 April 2026. Employers must pay this rate for all hours worked including overtime at 1.5 times the hourly rate. Packing operatives under 21 receive £10.00 per hour under the same rules.

GOV.UK confirms standard full-time packing shifts are limited to 48 hours per week on average over 17 weeks unless opted out in writing. Workers receive 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave including bank holidays calculated on actual hours worked. Overtime above 48 hours triggers mandatory rest breaks of 11 consecutive hours daily.

GOV.UK requires a valid passport or biometric residence permit plus a right to work share code for all packing job applicants. Employers must complete a right to work check before the first shift and retain records for two years. No formal education certificates are mandated for entry-level packing positions.

GOV.UK specifies that packing operative roles fall below the Skilled Worker visa threshold and cannot be sponsored unless the salary reaches £38,700 or the going rate for the SOC code. Most warehouse packing positions are filled by UK or settled workers only. Seasonal worker visas do not cover permanent packing contracts.
