Why packing jobs popped up on my radar in NZ

Honestly I never planned to work packing stuff when I first landed in New Zealand. But a mate mentioned easy cash at the orchards near Hastings and I gave it a shot. Turns out those roles show up everywhere once you start looking.

Thing is they suit folks who want quick starts without fancy quals. You stand on lines sorting apples or box up frozen goods in a chilly warehouse. Pay comes steady if you're reliable.

Seasonal spots that actually hire

Fruit packing kicks off in summer and runs through autumn down south. Places like Hawke's Bay and Nelson fill spots fast for apple and kiwifruit lines. Warehouses near Auckland need people year round for export boxes.

Big difference shows up between standing all day in a cold store versus sunny sheds. One pays more but wrecks your back faster.

How the money shakes out

Most start around 22 bucks an hour on casual rates. Overtime kicks in after 40 hours and some places add bonuses when the season ramps up. From what I've seen you can clear decent savings if you bunk cheap and skip the pub every night.

But rent near the orchards climbs in peak months. So check hostels or worker cabins before you commit.

Visas and getting legal

Working holiday folks grab these gigs easy. Just rock up with your visa sorted and a basic police check. Employers rarely ask for prior experience but they do want you to show up on time every shift.

Don't skip the contract read. Some places deduct for transport or gear which eats into take home pay.

Real talk though the work drains you. Long hours on concrete floors mean sore feet fast. Still beats sitting broke in a hostel scrolling job boards.

Finding the gigs without the runaround

Facebook groups for backpackers in NZ drop listings daily. Or check Seek and Trade Me for packing operator roles. Word of mouth at campsites works too. I got my second job because someone overheard me asking at a dairy.

Apply early before Christmas rush. Spots vanish quick once backpacker buses roll into town.
