As per the Department of Employment and Labour, the national minimum wage for cleaning staff is R30.33 per hour effective from 1 March 2026. This amounts to R5,247 per month based on 173 hours. Overtime rates are 1.5 times the ordinary rate for hours exceeding 45 per week.

Foreigners require a General Work Visa for non-critical skills roles like cleaning staff, processed through VFS Global on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs. The application fee is R1,520 as of 2026, and processing takes 8-10 weeks. A job offer from a registered employer and police clearance are mandatory.

No formal education like Matric is required for entry-level cleaning staff positions under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Employers may prefer 6 months of prior experience, but on-the-job training is common for beginners. Age eligibility starts at 16 years.

Required documents include a certified ID copy, matric certificate if available, CV, and two references. A medical fitness certificate and bank statement for payroll setup are also needed. Applications are submitted at nearest Employment Services office.
