As per the Department of Employment and Labour, the national minimum wage is R30.33 per hour effective 1 March 2026 for packing staff and all ordinary workers. This amounts to R5,914 per month based on 195 ordinary hours. Overtime rates are 1.5 times the normal rate for the first 10 hours per week.

Non-South African citizens require a General Work Visa for packing staff roles, processed by the Department of Home Affairs at a fee of R1,520. Applications need a verified job offer, medical report, and police clearance, with processing up to 8 weeks from 1 January 2026. Critical skills visas do not cover unskilled packing positions.

No formal qualifications or prior experience are mandated under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act for packing staff, but employers often require Grade 10 completion and physical fitness for standing 8 hours daily. Minimum age is 16 years, with no upper limit specified. On-the-job training is standard for new hires.

Applicants must submit a certified South African ID or passport copy, CV, and proof of bank account. Employers register new employees for UIF within 14 days of starting work. No work permit or license is needed for basic packing duties.
