Quick answers about Restaurant Jobs in Canada

Q What is the minimum wage for restaurant servers in Ontario, Canada in 2026?
As per the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, the minimum wage for liquor servers in licensed establishments is $13.05 per hour plus tips as of October 1, 2026. The general minimum wage applicable if tips fall short is $18.65 per hour. Tips averaging $3.85 or more per hour exempt servers from full general minimum.
Q What work permit is required for international job seekers to work as a restaurant cook in Canada in 2026?
A Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) work permit is required, which needs a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from ESDC at $1,000 CAD employer fee for low-wage positions like cooks. Processing time is 10-22 weeks, with permit fee $155 CAD. Apply online through IRCC after LMIA approval.
Q What education or experience is needed for entry-level food counter attendant jobs in restaurants across Canada in 2026?
No formal education is required for NOC 65201 Food counter attendants; secondary school may be preferred. Typically 0-3 months of related experience or on-the-job training suffices. Some employers require basic customer service skills.
Q What documents do I need to apply and start working in a restaurant job in Canada?
Required documents include a resume, Social Insurance Number (SIN) application confirmation, and proof of work authorization like passport or permanent resident card. Employers must complete Form TD1 for tax credits and verify identity within 3 days of hire. No SIN means no pay.
