Distinguishing Features of the Class
This is a skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of welding tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Must have a knowledge of heavy duty trucks and equipment operation. Must be able to operate trucks and equipment to make repairs or modifications within shop or yard. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of helpers or Laborers.

Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Works as a skilled craft worker in welding, brazing, cutting or heating operations entailing the use of acetylene and electric equipment;

Welds bumpers, fenders, motor and gear casing;

Welds chains

Repairs snowplows, frames and hitches; Repairs damaged or rusted dump bodies;

Changes plow blades, loader bucket blade s or bulldozer blades.

Fabricates tailgates, hinges, hitches and a variety of parts needed in the shop;

Performs repairs on aluminum tanks and parts;

Repairs or fabricates salt spreader bodies;

Drives truck with equipment;

Cares for tools and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of full-time paid experience at the skilled craft worker level as a welder.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a current New York State Driver's License which must be presented at appointment and maintained throughout employment.

Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade;

Thorough knowledge of the resistance of metals under the welding flame and of the proper treatment of such metals to ensure perfect welding;

Ability to ascertain the degree of preheating required to avoid chilling;

Ability to readily identify welding materials and metals;

Skill in the use of electric welding apparatus to fabricate metal objects;

Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;

Ability to lay out work for self and others;

Good motor, hand and eye coordination;

Good eyesight and visual strength which will permit the eyes under proper working conditions to withstand the strain of prolonged exposure to the extensive glare of the welding flame;

Manual dexterity; good physical condition. Knowledge of Heli marc machines and operations.
